Introduction and history of microbiology:

  1. Micro-organisms:
  1. Classification
  2. Shape and arrangement
  3. Special characteristics – spores, capsules, enzymes, motility, reproduction.

2.Disinfection and antiseptics.

3.Sterilization and asepsis.

  1. Antibacterial agents – fundamental aspect, susceptibility tests.

  2. Infection – source of infection, portals of entry, spread of infection.

  3. Non-specific immunity.

  4. Immunity – natural and acquired.

  5. Allergy and hypersensitivity.

  6. Outline of common pathogenic bacteria and diseases produced by them. Treatment and prevention

  • Respiratory tract infections.
  • Meningitis.
  • Enteric infections.
  • Anaerobic infections.
  • Urinary tract infections.
  • Leprosy, tuberculosis and miscellaneous infections
  • Wound infections
  • Sexually transmitted diseases
  • Hospital acquired infections.
  1. Pathogenic yeast’s and fungi

  2. Virology – Virus infections with special mention of Hepatitis, Poliomyelitis & Rabies.

  3. Definition of different pathological test. Such as

  • Blood for CP
  • RA test
  • MT test
  • TB culture
  • AFB staining
  • Blood sugar fasting or randomly
  • ASO titre
  • Widel test
  • Serum calcium
  • Urea creatinine
  • Serum electrolytes\
  • Serum bilirubin
  • SGOT
  • SGPT,
  • Prothrombin time
  • Alkaline Phosphatase
  • Uric Acid, Cholesterol
  • HLA B- 27
  • SSS Test.
  • Urine for RE/RME,
  • C/S and Pregnancy test.
  • For stool RE/RME, C/S, OBT etc those are related to the different pathological conditions.
