Popliteal fossa


Situation: It is situted in the posterior aspect of lower  of femur, knee joint and upper part of tibia.



a) Above & laterally: Biceps femoris.

b) Above & medially:

  • Semitendinosus &
  • Semimembranosus

Supplemented by:

    • Gracilis
    • Sartorius

Adductor magnus

c) Below & laterally:

  • Lateral head of gastrocnemius.
  • Plantaris

d) Below & medially: Medial head of gastrocnemius.

e) Floor: From above downwards:

  • Popliteal surface of femur.
  • Capsul of knee joint with oblique popliteal ligament.
  • Fascia covering popliteus.
  • Posterior surface of upper end of tibia.

f) Roof: Formed by

  • Skin
  • Superficial fascia &
  • Popliteal fascia



  • Popliteal artery & its branches.
  • Popliteal vein & its tributaries.
  • Tibial nerve & its branches.
  • Common peroneal nerve & its branches.
  • Posterior cutaneous nerve of thigh.
  • Genicular branch of obturator nerve.
  • Popliteal lymph nodes.
  • Fat
